The Stellwerk is Cologne’s first and North Rhine-Westphalia’s largest fully wooden office building designed for deconstruction, and it is one of a total of 11 planned structures in the approximately seven-hectare I/D Cologne urban district in Cologne-Mülheim.
The building, which covers approximately 23,000 square meters, consists of two trapezoidal sections with green courtyards and a seven-story tower facing the plaza. With the exception of the stairwells, the underground parking garage, and the elevator shafts, all major building components—such as the structural framework and the clearly structured facade—are constructed from wood, a renewable resource, which reduces average CO2 emissions over the entire life cycle by about one-third per square meter compared to conventional reinforced concrete construction. The demountable structure is designed for reuse, so that the individual wooden components can be dismantled and reused.
The central theme of wood is also visibly incorporated into the interior design, which is reflected in the interior layout. Flexibly configurable office spaces to accommodate a wide range of tenant needs, a multifunctional foyer with conference areas and a dining concept, as well as numerous terraces, landscaped courtyards, and a rooftop terrace create attractive workspaces within a building that is sustainable through and through.
