On July 1st 2001 the new terminal at Düsseldorf Airport opened its doors.
Exactly 25 years ago today, the new Düsseldorf Airport 2000 plus began operations.
In 1997, sop architekten – then still operating under the name JSK Düsseldorf – were unanimously awarded first prize in an international design competition, thereby securing the contract for one of Europe’s largest airport construction projects. Following 31 months of construction whilst the airport remained in operation, the time had finally come in July 2001, and the first passengers were able to check in at the new terminal building.
To this day, the S-shaped development layout and modular floor plans offer the greatest possible flexibility for expanding or adding terminal sections as required.
