Award in the Competition for the Eschweiler Sports Center
In 2024, the City of Eschweiler held a general planning competition for the reconstruction of the sports center that was destroyed during the flood disaster. In this competition, sop architekten, in collaboration with Kraft.Raum landscape architects, were awarded third place. The design divides the new sports center on Jahnstraße into two horizontally structured building volumes that connect with each other. This allows the swimming pool and the sports hall to operate as independent units, each with its own separate entrance. Between the two structures, a new public space is created—a meeting point that also provides access to a café and additional fitness and training areas. The transparent entrance area, the wide staircase, and the new neighborhood café with its outdoor terrace form a welcoming gateway, integrating the new sports center harmoniously into the surrounding urban district.
