• New Rheydt District Library, Mönchengladbach

The former Karstadt building on Rheydter Marktplatz in Mönchengladbach, which had been vacated, is being revitalized in line with requirements and gradually put to new uses. On the ground floor of the property, which is located directly next to the future “New Rheydt Administration Building,” the new Rheydt district library will be created by early 2026, covering approximately 2,050 m² and featuring various themed areas, reading and work zones, a gaming lounge, and many other amenities.

Newly created openings in the façade provide more daylight and natural ventilation. Barrier-free access, a drinking water station, newly designed sanitary facilities with a toilet for all, and a modern office wing of around 400m² offer contemporary and sustainable space for the library and its use by all citizens. The library's space is designed to be resource-efficient, energy-efficient, and completely barrier-free.

The conversion of the ground floor into the new district library, which EWMG is responsible for according to plans by sop architekten, will create an open, inclusive environment for education, culture, and encounters, which should also contribute to the revitalization of Rheydt's city center.
