Third prize for the Centre of Excellence in Eschweiler
sop architekten and Kraft.Raum landscape architects were awarded third prize in the building and open space planning competition for their design of the new Centre of Excellence on the site of a former abattoir in Eschweiler.
The sustainable and energy-efficient innovation and business centre is an example of how design can support regional technology and innovation transfer. Situated on the banks of the Inde river, the buildings open up towards the town centre with inviting open spaces and a neighbourhood square with restaurants. In addition to flexible office and event spaces, the spatial programme also includes laboratory and workshop areas. A high point at the entrance to the site acts as a landmark and recognisable feature of the new innovation centre.
Brick plinths, some made from original bricks from the former abattoir, form the base of the various buildings, over which sit the modular facades of recyclable timber and the green exterior of the multi-purpose public mobility hub. The flexible floor plan with multiple passageways connecting the river and city views, the multi-divisible factory hall, the exhibition areas and the green outdoor spaces create the perfect conditions for a lively, changeable and open innovation centre close to the city centre. The compact design is intended to ensure resource-efficient construction and cost-effective operation.
